Tourist Help & Feeding Guide

Every traveller who cares makes a real difference.

1. Feed Them Responsibly

It’s natural to want to share your meal, but not all human food is safe. To truly help:

  • Feed cat food if you can. Most mini markets sell affordable wet or dry food, or you can bring some with you if you plan ahead.

  • Avoid foods like onions, garlic, bones, chocolate, or salted meats as these can make cats very sick.

  • Provide clean water dehydration is one of the biggest dangers during the summer heat.

  • Feed in a consistent spot if you’re staying for a few days. Cats remember and will return, ensuring they don’t wander far and risk injury.

2. Look Out for Sick or Injured Cats

If you see a cat with:

  • Wounds, infections, or severe weight loss

  • Discharge from the eyes or nose

  • Limping or visible pain

You can contact or visit the local vet (Dr. Elisabeth) — the only full-time vet on the island who works tirelessly with rescue volunteers. @veterinary_centre_milos

3. Support TNR and Local Efforts

Feeding is an act of kindness but TNR (Trap–Neuter–Return) is what breaks the cycle.
When you donate to For the Cats of Milos, your contribution goes directly toward:

  • Sterilisations that prevent hundreds of kittens from suffering

  • Medical treatment and vaccinations

  • Feeding programs during the quiet season

Every tourist who gives, even a few euros or dollars, helps reduce future suffering and supports the people on the ground who care year round.

4. Spread Awareness

After you leave Milos, keep their story alive:

  • Share your experience on social media.

  • Tag us (@forthecatsofmilos) or include your photos in posts that highlight the cats’ reality, not just their cuteness.

  • Encourage friends to support or donate before visiting.

Raising awareness is one of the most powerful gifts you can give.

5. Leave Kindness Behind

Even the smallest actions matter:

  • Refill empty water bowls you find.

  • Leave a little bag of food for locals who continue feeding after you go.

  • Speak kindly to the cats they may not understand your words, but they feel your heart.

Your compassion doesn’t just feed them, it shows them they are seen, loved, and worth caring for.

Together, We Can Change Their Story

Each meal, each donation, each act of kindness helps create a safer, gentler world for the cats who call this island home.
