The Story of ‘Fish’
During our visit to Sarakiniko Beach, we noticed a frail, exhausted cat sitting quietly by the shore. His fur clung to his thin frame, and his eyes told a story of exhaustion and hunger. We went over to check on him and to make sure he was okay.
We offered him food and water and the moment he finished eating he came straight to me, curling up in my lap and purring softly. Despite his weakness, his gentle nature shone through.
A local passerby stopped to chat and shared that she often came to feed the cats in the area. She told us that before we arrived, this little one had been trying to catch a fish to eat but he was simply too weak to manage it. From that moment, we named him Fish.
Fish touched our hearts deeply. We returned the next day with more food and water, hoping to see him growing stronger. Each day after we left Milos, I found myself thinking of him and praying he’d be okay, especially with the harsh weather and quiet season ahead.
A few days ago, we learned the news that broke our hearts: Fish had passed away from hypothermia and dehydration. He didn’t make it through the quiet season.
That loss became our turning point.
We realised there were thousands more cats just like Fish unseen, unprotected, and waiting for help that might never come.
Fish’s story isn’t just his own, it’s the story of so many others left behind when the world goes quiet. And that’s why we’re here. To make sure his life meant something.
To bring light, warmth, and hope to the cats who remain. Because every life deserves to be seen, fed, and loved even when no one’s watching.
